What is a MAD?

A Mandibular Advancement Device (MAD) is a custom-made oral appliance designed to treat snoring and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). It resembles a sports mouthguard and is worn during sleep. The MAD works by gently advancing the lower jaw (mandible) forward, which in turn helps to keep the airway open by preventing the collapse of soft tissues at the back of the throat. This advancement promotes improved airflow and reduces instances of breathing pauses or snoring during sleep. MADs are prescribed and fitted by qualified dental professionals specializing in sleep medicine after a thorough evaluation of the patient's sleep disorder and oral health. These devices offer a non-invasive and effective alternative to continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy for individuals with mild to moderate sleep apnea or those unable to tolerate CPAP treatment.

Effective Treatment: MAD is a clinically proven device for the treatment of snoring and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). It works by advancing the lower jaw, thereby opening the airway and reducing airway obstruction during sleep.

Custom Fit: MADs are custom-fitted devices tailored to each individual's mouth anatomy, ensuring maximum comfort and effectiveness.

Non-Invasive: Unlike surgical interventions, MADs offer a non-invasive treatment option for sleep-related breathing disorders, making them preferable for patients seeking conservative therapies.

Improved Sleep Quality: By promoting better airflow and reducing instances of airway collapse, MADs can significantly improve sleep quality for both the user and their sleep partner.

Patient Compliance: MADs are known for their high patient compliance rates due to their comfortable design and ease of use, making them a popular choice among individuals with mild to moderate sleep apnea.

Customization Options: There are various types of MADs available, offering customization options to accommodate different preferences and requirements of patients.

Clinically Proven: MADs have been extensively studied and proven to be an effective treatment option for snoring and mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea, with research demonstrating their efficacy in improving sleep parameters and reducing symptoms.

Dental Professional Supervision: MADs are typically prescribed and fitted by qualified dental professionals who specialize in sleep medicine, ensuring proper diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up care.

Long-Term Benefits: Beyond alleviating immediate symptoms, MADs can provide long-term benefits by reducing the risks associated with untreated sleep apnea, such as cardiovascular disease and daytime fatigue.

Patient Education and Support: Dental professionals who provide MAD therapy also offer education and support to help patients understand the importance of compliance and optimal oral health maintenance while using the device.
